Conciliar Bodies Records 1995-2001

Records in this series were generated or retained by the Rev. H. George Anderson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) from 1995-2001 and comprise those pertaining to conciliar bodies, those organizations to which the ELCA relates that have governing councils. Conciliar bodies represented in this series include the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), the National Council of Churches USA (NCC), and the World Council of Churches (WCC). Records date from 1995-2001 and include typewritten and printed electronic mail correspondence and memoranda, circular letters, printed topical reports, pamphlets, brochures, news articles, and minutes, agenda and exhibits. Many of these records represent Bishop Anderson's participation on these organization's governing boards, in the case of the LWF, its executive council and the NCC, its executive board. Subject matter includes the 1997 LWF Assembly held in Hong Kong; meetings of the LWF executive council and the USA National Committee for LWF; meetings of the NCC's general assemblies held in Cleveland, Ohio in 1999 and Atlanta, Georgia in 2000, and meetings of its executive board; and the 8th Assembly of the WCC held in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1998. In addition to general correspondence that addresses topics of concern and consultation for church leaders working with these conciliar bodies, there are also folders with records related to specific topics, such as the NCC's Burned Churches project created in response to a wave of church building arsons that occurred in 1996; Jubilee 2000, the debt-reduction campaign that focused on canceling developing nations' unpayable debt by the year 2000; and the WCC's Decade to Overcome Violence, a ten-year initiative to strengthen networks to overcome violence.
